Turtles on the Sarsaparilla Trail

This past weekend I was feeling a little uninspired. Despite all of the ideas running through my head for future client sessions, I couldn’t come up with a single blog post.
That was when my wonderful husband thought of going for a walk along one of the Greenbelt Trails here in Ottawa.

We ended up going to the Sarsaparilla Trail just off of Richmond Road. It is a little trail, only 0.8km long, but it is pack full of trail-y goodness. It has a little picnic area and a boardwalk overlooking a beaver pond. And though we didn’t see any beavers, we did see a great deal of wildlife considering how small the trail is.

Snapping TurtleThis big guy was one of two large snapping turtles we spotted. We also watched several red-painted turtles and fed some chipmunks too.

It was a great afternoon (after which I got some delicious sushi – yum), and it gave me material for multiple posts!

Macro

I finally got myself a proper macro lens a few weeks ago and I am in love!

I bought a Nikon 105mm macro lens and it is seriously fantastic. I had used a couple of these lenses before and it has been on my ‘to buy’ list for quite some time, but the actual purchase kept getting bumped by other lenses and pieces of equipment that I needed more. That being said, it finally made its way to the top of the list.Flower Lily Macro PhotographyFlower Lily Macro Photography

I am not going to go into a thorough technical review here, it isn’t a new lens and there are lots of other, better reviews online already. I will say, it is a beautiful lens and if you are thinking about picking up a macro lens, I highly recommend this one.

I have been playing with my new acquisition around the house and neighbourhood (and on a few recent jobs too of course!) and the photos here are obviously the results of that.

Sometimes I get distracted

I am usually a pretty focused individual. Able to work on a task from start to finish, or at least multi-task my way through it from start to finish. But every once in a while, I get distracted.

For the past few years, the things that have been distracting me are almost entirely photo-related (I’m talking 99.999% here). I am working away on some engineering task and suddenly it hits me, a fabulous idea for a shoot. Much like when I am inspired, I feel the urge to go out and shoot something. But this is different because I can’t just leave where I am and what I am doing to satisfy this craving. Instead I jot down a note, a title of a series or a bit of a session plan. Enough to get the idea out of my head and in some more tangible form I can shove into my purse to later be better described in my Idea Book.

Sometimes I even find myself getting distracted during my shoots. This normally doesn’t happen when I am shooting clients as I get so excited about them and the shots we are able to create that even when I get a little distracted, it is still about them and their shoot. No, I tend to get distracted during my own shoots. I will be out shooting something specific, like a museum or zoo during a trip, or friends at a party and then find ‘something shiny’ to shoot, something I find special. To be honest, I don’t even realize I have done it until later when I am reviewing the shots. My friends or family will look through them with me and see zebra, leopard, rusty thingamabob, lions, tiger – wait, what was that in the middle?

I love it. It reminds me that I really do love what I do. If the fact that I could (and have) rambled on for hours on end about technical and not-so-technical aspects of photography or the degree of fun I can have with my Idea Book and a free afternoon didn’t remind me enough, then this does. The little glimpses into new shots, new ideas amidst all the ideas and shots I was already working through that day and all of the ones already logged in my Idea Book. They remind me that there is so much more to shoot and so many more moments to capture.

The above photo is one of those moments of distraction. I was shooting away in my backyard, a personal shoot for something completely unrelated. I turned around and saw the sun peeking through the lattice, and the dried up vine hanging on my fence. There was no choice – it had to be shot.

Happy Birthday Buddy

2 years ago my brother called me and I wrote the following post-it note:

2 years ago the best little guy was born.
Which means, today is Jackson’s birthday.

When it comes to stuff like this I am not very good at words. I tried for quite a while to write something beautiful and touching. Something that conveyed just how much I love this little guy, but my words failed me, and they continue to do so. So instead of words I have decided to use photos, because I am much better with those. These are just a few of the many, many, many shots I have of Jackson from the last year. When I was going through them, I kept having to check the date and do the math to make sure these were during his second year and not his first. It is crazy when you realize how much he has grown and changed in the last year. I believe I have said this before, but it is in this last year that he has really shown his personality. He is not just an adorable baby anymore, but a real little person.

That post-it note is still stuck on my office wall (though I don’t think anyone calls him Jack as it just doesn’t suit him). And when I see it amidst all of the contact numbers for clients and notes about conversion rates and various regulations, it makes me smile.

Tomorrow is your birthday party and I can’t wait to spend the day with you!
I love you buddy.

Alaskan Island

Just a quick image from our Alaskan trip.

Alaskan Island

This shot was taken as we were sailing from Southern Alaskan into Northern BC towards Victoria.
As for the rest of the shots from our trip, I have so far posted the photos from Seattle and am working on the rest of of our travel destinations in between client sessions.
