Froggy Research

I always arrive to my shoot location early. I do this to check out the lighting and make sure the different photo spots I was thinking of will work for the shoot on that particular day. When I am shooting at a new location, I like to check it out in advance if at all possible. You see, I am a planner, so I like to know what I am getting into with respect to lighting and spots for photos as best as possible. Sometimes it isn’t possible to check things out in person and lucky for me in this age of technology, there are almost always photos online.

This past weekend Dave and I did some research for possible shots at the Museum of Nature. While we were there we visited the various exhibits including the Special Frogs exhibit. Now, I am not a frog lover, in fact they often gross me out immensely. But the teeny-tiny, brightly-coloured ones make me happy, like the below tree frog.

Museum of Nature Tree FrogIsn’t this little guy cute?! Besides getting some shots of little frogs, we found so many fantastic spots for photos and I am oh so looking forward to my shoot there later this year!! Ottawa is such a beautiful city and I love that I not only get to live here, but also photograph others here as they celebrate their lives.

Turtles on the Sarsaparilla Trail

This past weekend I was feeling a little uninspired. Despite all of the ideas running through my head for future client sessions, I couldn’t come up with a single blog post.
That was when my wonderful husband thought of going for a walk along one of the Greenbelt Trails here in Ottawa.

We ended up going to the Sarsaparilla Trail just off of Richmond Road. It is a little trail, only 0.8km long, but it is pack full of trail-y goodness. It has a little picnic area and a boardwalk overlooking a beaver pond. And though we didn’t see any beavers, we did see a great deal of wildlife considering how small the trail is.

Snapping TurtleThis big guy was one of two large snapping turtles we spotted. We also watched several red-painted turtles and fed some chipmunks too.

It was a great afternoon (after which I got some delicious sushi – yum), and it gave me material for multiple posts!

Jackson at the Zoo, Part Two

We went to the Toronto Zoo to visit the pandas, and they were pretty darn cute.

But this little guy was pretty cute too – and really liked seeing all the animals. He tried to say their names and make their sounds, it was pretty freaking adorable.

As I mentioned before, it was a really fun day at the zoo and Jackson seemed to have a ton of fun!

Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens may have been my favourite (non-Disney) part of our trip. It was a little chilly (to be honest, the entire trip was a little on the cold side [for Florida] as it was during their cold snap), but that really just meant that there were significantly fewer people there!

Homasassa Springs

Homasassa Springs has a large collection of wild and resident birds, crocodiles and of course, manatees. When we visited they had five female manatees that live in the Park. The ladies are protected from wild manatees by grates that can go up and down depending on various conditions of the areas. As I mentioned before, I really find these manatees peaceful and beautiful.

Homasassa Springs is also home to a hippo named Henry. The day we visited turned out to be Henry’s birthday, for which they gave him a new tire to play with.
