I’ve said it before and I will say it again, winter engagement sessions here in Ottawa can be brutal! There really is no telling what kind of winter day you will get, and the cold, storm-ridden days are just as likely as the cold, windy, blue-sky filled days. And for some couples, dealing with the outdoor conditions just isn’t for them, but fortunately there are a ton of indoor locations to choose from in the area. Mix those with a few quick trips outside, and you have a lovely winter session in which no one had to get cold!
This is exactly what Sarah + Kelvin chose to do for their session and Aquatopia was such a great choice of venue!

The weather this Fall has been really weird. At first it seemed like Summer just wouldn’t leave and then it was gone in an instant leaving everyone oh so cold, only to return for a day or so here and there. It was really hard to gauge when the Fall leaves would look their best and to figure out dates for our couples who wanted their engagement sessions under all those gorgeous colours.
The Ornamental Gardens are quickly becoming one of my absolute favourite portrait locations in the city! The Arboretum across the way is lovely of course, and I enjoy shooting there too (especially now that the Fall colours are starting to pop up everywhere) but there is just something about the gardens that take it to the next level – and honestly I think it’s those greenhouses just down the street!
Pretty much every photographer know about Golden Hour. it’s that gorgeous time in the evening as sunset approaches where the sun is lower in the sky and creates a nice warm glow that lights subjects up so beautifully. It is my favourite time to do engagement sessions as it really is just so wonderful to shoot in! Golden Hour is so well known that even a lot of our clients have heard of it and are looking for the type of images we create using that light.
I am so incredibly happy that the weather forecast was wrong leading up to Ellen + Mike’s engagement session! Everything had been calling for rain – so much so that we were thinking of alternative locations and some indoor spots. Thankfully, come Sunday morning the skies looked completely clear and super sunny and the forecast changed its opinion on the whole rain matter.
