You know that you want an engagement session, have picked the right season and time of day for it and even the perfect location. Now what are you going to wear and what is your spouse-to-be going to wear alongside you?
Our final special feature on engagements is all about what to wear to your engagement session. From dressing for the season to coordinating your outfits together, we’re sharing a few of our favourite tips and tricks to looking picture perfect for your session.
- Think of Your Location
Definitely take your location into mind when thinking of what to wear. Are you going to on a trail for your session, then perhaps a super formal outfit won’t work (and the heels may drive you nuts with all the walking). Also, if your location is slightly themed, perhaps your outfits could be as well: Are you having your session at a ballpark, maybe wear your favourite team’s jersey. Downtown at sunset, perhaps getting dressed to the nine would suit.
Side Counter-Tip: Although matching your location is your best bet, having a second outfit that opposes it could be really neat. The contrast of casual setting to formal clothes can create some really great images! - Avoid Matchy-Matchy
Although you want to make sure your outfits are coordinated, avoid being matchy-matchy. Instead of both wearing blue outfits, think of colours that would compliment each other and are on the same level in terms of vibrancy. If your partner is wearing a blue shirt and pants, perhaps you could wear a white patterned dress or top (just as an example as it seems to be a popular look).
Side Tip: Definitely make sure the two of you are dressed on the same scale in terms of casual versus formal.
- Drop the Coats
Now I know Ottawa can get cold, particularly in the winter, but the bulk that winter jackets add isn’t always the best look. So be prepared to drop the jacket between shots, even during winter sessions. Don’t worry though, there are lots of ways we can ensure you guys don’t freeze to death!
- Leave the Logos at Home
When searching through your closet, try to stay away from clothes with logos, texts or other distracting elements on them.
Side Counter-Tip: If you want to include some shots of you supporting your favourite team, then logos are always the best way to do so – especially if the two of you are fans of rival teams!!
- Accessorize
It may sound silly, but adding a great scarf, statement necklace, great watch or just simple pieces to your outfit can take you from great to fantastic when it comes to your engagement photos. They can also really help with getting some beautiful detail shots to compliment the rest of the images we will capture during the shoot.
Side Tip: In a similar fashion, layers are great for adding depth to your images and as an added bonus, they can also help with the sometimes unpredictable weather.
- Be Colourful
Unless your location is super bright and colourful itself, think about wearing a colour that will really pop in your images. And if you aren’t comfortable straying from you regular neutral or more subdued colour palette, maybe add a poppy accessory.
- Change it Up
If you have a full-length engagement session, definitely consider bringing along a second outfit to your engagement session. Having both a casual and dressier outfit in your session can really help you get two completely different looks to your images. And if you know you want one style over the other, but can’t choose between your two favourite shirts, changing partway through can give you the best of both worlds!
- Express Yourself
Your engagement session is a time to really capture who you are as a couple, so definitely wear something that expresses your personal styles!
- Make Sure You’re Comfortable
The most important factor when choosing what to wear is ensuring you are comfortable. If your pants pinch or your shoes give you blisters, your discomfort may come across in the photos, which is obviously not a good thing. And if you are concerned about what you are wearing, you may just not have as much fun as you could during the session – and that would be a real shame.
If you are still having trouble figuring out what to wear to your engagement session, definitely ask your photographer. They likely have some great, past sessions they can send your way as inspiration to help you figure things out.
