I love winter engagement sessions! And, if I’m being honest, I think winter may be my favourite season to shoot engagement sessions. Don’t get me wrong, I love engagement sessions any time of the year, but there is just something magical about an engaged couple in love amidst a snow covered landscape. Bundled up in a big scarf and wrapped up in each other’s arms – it doesn’t get much better than that really. I think the proof is in the pudding really, I mean just look at what Dana + Matt pulled off during their session at Gatineau Park.
Oh my goodness, the weather this year has been so ridiculously weird! Swapping between mild, rainy days and super cold temperature drops has resulted in a ground covering of both ice-topped snow and snow-covered ice. This has basically resulted in treacherous walking conditions wherever you go, which, for an already clumsy person like me, means a lot of falling. But I am happy to report that despite the weird walking conditions, I didn’t fall even once during Dana + Matt’s engagement session last week! It’s kind of a weird thing to be proud of, but I am.
My favourite locations for engagement sessions are always the ones that have a real significance to the future bride and groom. Whether it is where they had their first date, the trail they walk along every Sunday afternoon, or a place full of childhood memories, something with a special meaning for them (or even just one of them) always translates to being a great venue for these sessions! It also means the final images are not only a great marker of this time in their lives, but also of this special place.
So when Kristen mentioned that she was interested in doing her and Chris’ engagement session at her grandparents home I was definitely on board!
For most of our sessions, the first few images are really just a warming up period. I don’t tend to use very many of them in the final images. But, as I mentioned in their sneak peek, Chantal + Mathieu really were complete naturals at this whole photoshoot thing and they nailed their very first few images! So much so that I have been using them as part of their sneak peek, preview and social media posts. So despite their nerves and feeling like they didn’t know what they were doing, they really did an absolutely magnificent job!
I used to think it was such a long drive to get out to Gatineau Park, but in the past week or so I have ventured out there twice and haven driven myself both times (rather than Dave driving me around and me therefore not paying attention to the route we are taking or really where we are in general), and I can now tell you that it really isn’t that far. A quick trip down Island Park Drive and I was on the other side of the river enjoying a nice evening in the park with Kristen + Chris.
