We’ve had some pretty hot weddings, and although Katherine + Mike’s day wasn’t the hottest on record for us, it was a very, very close second! But all’s well that ends well and this wedding ended very well as at the end of the day these two absolutely wonderful people were married!
So after this wedding day was done, we were asked by a few people how we handled the heat. And to be honest, we handled it very similarly to a winter wedding. We popped in and out of the air conditioned venue during portraits, taking little breaks to cool down a bit and making sure everyone got lots of water. We had towels on hand for the guys and blotting paper for the ladies to keep the sweat at bay (or at least as much as possible as it was not only hot but humid too!).
The key to doing little spurts like this is to keep everyone on the same page. Every time we stepped inside for a cool down, we would tell them how many minutes we would be inside and then who we would need for the next round of photos (bride + groom, wedding party and/or family). We also let them know where we were going on the property for photos and roughly how long we would be out there. I have found that all of this info helps everyone know what to do and be a bit more positive about being out in the blistering heat. And of course, the fact that we predominantly shoot in the shade helps too.
But the only reason it works is while we are out shooting, Dave and I are working double time to make sure our couple still gets lots of great photos from their day. It is nice to have breaks, but no one wants fewer photos so on any wedding day with little bursts of photos like these it is even more important to work different angles, make small posing adjustments to vary things up and of course the second shooter is even handier than usual. It results in a very hot and sweaty set of photographers, but that really doesn’t matter since we are on the side of the camera that can’t be seen in the photos, haha!
I also didn’t mind working in that heat as I knew I was doing it for a couple I truly adore! Katherine + Mike are such sweet, loving, thoughtful people who would do anything for their family + friends and getting to be a part of their wedding day was really special for both Dave and I. And of course all of the gorgeousness and beautiful details were just the cherry on and already delightful sundae – even if it was melting a little (and there were actual sundaes at this wedding, so yeah, it was awesome!).
Thanks to all of these amazing vendors who helped make this wedding possible!
